Bartlett Society event

Please join us Weds. Dec. 9th at 6pm at Providence Public Library as we warmly welcome Russell A. Potter, Ph.D., Professor of English and Media Studies, Rhode Island College, to discuss his Arctic exploration collection and research.

'From Sketches Made Upon the Spot: Illustrating the Arctic Regions in Nineteenth-century in Books and Newspapers'

In the nineteenth century, the public fascination with Arctic exploration coincided with a vast expansion of visual culture, from panoramas and dioramas to prints to illustrated newspapers. Dr. Russell A. Potter, author of Arctic Spectacles: The Frozen North in Visual Culture 1818-1875 (University of Washington Press, 2007) will share some gems from his personal collections, including panorama programs, sheets from the Illustrated London News, Gleason's Pictorial, and Lloyd's Illustrated Newspaper, as well first editions of exploration narratives featuring woodcuts, engravings, and etchings of Arctic scenes.
